Overview

Shri Bharat Mandir is the oldest and most sacred temple in Rishikesh, established by Adi Shankaracharya in 839 AD on the auspicious day of Basant Panchami. Dedicated to Lord Hrishikesh (a form of Lord Vishnu), the temple features a unique idol carved out of a single piece of Saligram stone. According to ancient legends, Lord Rama and his brothers spent time here during their exile. The temple complex houses an ancient banyan tree that is believed to be over 1,000 years old, surrounding three distinct sacred trees growing together (Banyan, Peepal, and Neem). Visitors can explore the in-house museum displaying 9th-century statues, ancient coins, and stone carvings discovered during archaeological excavations around the temple grounds.
